Inlays and Onlays: Durable Solutions for Tooth Restoration
Inlays and onlays are conservative yet effective dental restorations designed to repair teeth that are too damaged for a simple filling but not damaged enough to require a full crown. Often referred to as indirect fillings, these restorations are crafted outside the mouth—typically in a dental lab—using materials like porcelain, gold, or composite resin. Inlays fit within the grooves of a tooth, while onlays extend over one or more cusps. Both are designed to blend seamlessly with the natural tooth structure and restore function and strength.
The process usually involves two appointments: one for preparing the tooth and taking impressions, and another for bonding the final restoration. Because they are fabricated with precision and high-quality materials, inlays and onlays offer superior durability and a snug fit compared to traditional fillings. They also require less removal of healthy tooth structure, making them a minimally invasive option for restoring decayed or damaged teeth.

An inlay fits inside the tooth’s grooves, while an onlay covers one or more cusps of the tooth.
They are commonly made from porcelain, gold, or tooth-colored composite resin.
Unlike regular fillings placed directly in the mouth, inlays and onlays are custom-made in a lab and then bonded to the tooth for a precise fit.
